Indian stocks set for flat open amid easing crude prices and geopolitical uncertainty
India's benchmark indices are poised for a subdued opening as easing crude oil prices and mixed global cues fail to offset lingering geopolitical risks and technical consolidation.
Indian equity benchmarks are expected to open flat to slightly lower on Friday, tracking muted signals from the Gift Nifty. The offshore indicator traded at a discount of up to 20 points against the previous Nifty futures close, pointing to a cautious start for domestic investors.
This follows a broader pullback in the previous session, where the Nifty 50 slipped below the 24,100 level to close at 24,090.85. The BSE Sensex also retreated, shedding over 539 points to settle at 76,933.59 as profit-booking weighed on sentiment.
Market caution is being shaped by complex geopolitical dynamics and shifting commodity prices. Brent crude and West Texas Intermediate both edged lower, with WTI dropping to $83.31 a barrel as diplomatic progress between Iran and Oman eased supply-risk premiums in the Strait of Hormuz.
However, broader diplomatic hurdles remain after the US imposed severe new sanctions on Tehran and signaled an unwillingness to revive a previous nuclear memorandum. These tensions continue to inject volatility into energy markets, even as crude benchmarks remain on track for their first weekly decline in three weeks.
Global markets offered mixed signals overnight, with Wall Street closing largely flat despite a hotter-than-expected core PCE inflation reading. Technology stocks provided a bright spot, lifting the Nasdaq by roughly 1.5 percent following strong quarterly earnings from Nvidia, while Asian bourses traded mixed on Friday morning.
Domestic analysts note that the Nifty 50 is entering a critical technical phase. Ajit Mishra of Religare Broking observed that the index is narrowing into a tight consolidation band, creating a volatility squeeze that will dictate the near-term trend.
Mishra highlighted the 24,100 to 24,000 zone as crucial support, warning that a sustained break below could trigger a correction toward 23,650. Conversely, the index faces immediate resistance at 24,200 before the next hurdle at 24,400.
The Bank Nifty is showing relative technical strength but must decisively clear the 58,000 psychological barrier to build bullish momentum, according to Ponmudi R of Enrich Money. He advised that investors remain selective and prepared for profit-booking amid elevated macroeconomic uncertainties.
Amid the broader market consolidation, several brokerages have flagged specific opportunities for intraday trading. Analysts from firms including Choice Broking and Anand Rathi recommended tactical positions in a mix of industrial, pharmaceutical, and technology names such as Jindal Saw and Aurobindo Pharma.
