BitGo buys NYDIG institutional trading unit to expand crypto derivatives

BitGo has acquired NYDIG’s institutional trading business to broaden its digital asset derivatives and financing capabilities, signaling a push to capture more sophisticated institutional crypto demand.

BitGo has completed the acquisition of NYDIG’s institutional trading business and related assets, according to a Thursday announcement. The transaction brings approximately 30 NYDIG employees and their existing institutional trading relationships directly into BitGo’s operations.

The move is designed to expand BitGo’s institutional markets platform by branching out its derivatives offerings and enhancing financing capabilities. NYDIG’s trading unit previously provided a specialized suite of services, including derivatives, structured products, financing, and capital markets solutions. This acquisition allows BitGo to offer a more comprehensive infrastructure suite to institutional clients navigating the increasingly complex digital asset landscape. The integration is expected to deepen liquidity and product availability for BitGo's existing customer base.

Mike Belshe, CEO and co-founder of BitGo, highlighted the shifting demands of the market. He noted that "institutions increasingly want to work with a trusted partner that can support the full lifecycle of digital assets – from custody and trading to financing and settlement." Belshe added that the acquisition is "expected to enable us to serve a broader base of sophisticated clients."

For NYDIG, the divestiture marks a strategic pivot away from institutional trading services and a return to its core operational strengths. The firm intends to concentrate its resources entirely on its vertically integrated power generation, bitcoin mining, and high-performance computing data center development business.

Market participants reacted positively to the strategic realignment. BitGo’s NYSE-listed shares, trading under the ticker BBTGO, rose 1.99 percent to close at $7.16 on Thursday following the announcement.

The deal highlights a broader trend in digital asset markets, where scale and service breadth are becoming critical competitive advantages. Firms that can bundle custody, trading, and financing are better positioned to win mandates from large asset managers. By absorbing NYDIG’s trading expertise, BitGo aims to capture a larger share of the institutional derivatives market.
