Oaxaca Guelaguetza Festival Targets $38M Impact, 3x ROI
Oaxaca's 2026 Guelaguetza festival is projected to generate $38 million in economic impact, demonstrating a threefold return on public investment for regional hospitality and retail sectors.
The Oaxaca Secretariat of Tourism (Sectur) projects the 2026 Guelaguetza festival will deliver a 668 million peso ($38 million) economic boost to the state capital. The figure represents an increase from the 639.94 million pesos ($37 million) recorded during the 2025 edition. To drive this growth, organizers are integrating the Vela de Velas 2026, a traditional Isthmus-style candle-lit celebration, into the month-long "Julio, mes de la Guelaguetza" program.
The financial architecture of the festival offers a clear metric for evaluating state-backed cultural investments. Raúl Ruiz Robles, head of the Secretariat of Economic Development (Sedeco), highlighted that the 2024 edition yielded a 2.99 peso return for every peso of public money spent. The state invested 175.6 million pesos ($10 million) in 2024, which translated into 525.75 million pesos ($30 million) in broader economic impact across the region.
This commercial spillover is becoming increasingly formalized for 2026. Sedeco has structured a dedicated business matchmaking program, projecting more than 500 meetings between Oaxacan producers and both national and international buyers. These targeted B2B sessions are expected to independently generate over 36 million pesos ($2 million) in economic impact, distinct from the baseline tourism spending figures.
The underlying tourism data supports the projection of sustained demand for local hospitality, transport, and food services. In 2025, the festival drew 144,655 tourists who reported an average daily expenditure of 2,081 pesos per visitor. When combined with a parallel mezcal fair, the total economic footprint for 2025 reached approximately 680 million pesos ($39 million), establishing a benchmark the 2026 core festival aims to closely match.
The 94th edition of the Guelaguetza will feature its marquee Lunes del Cerro performances on July 20 and 27, 2026, at the Auditorio Guelaguetza in Oaxaca de Juárez. Tickets will become available on June 1 exclusively through the Superboletos platform. Pricing is tiered, ranging from free admission for community access in Palcos C and D to 1,632 pesos for Palco A.
