ToneTag AI turns India payment devices into banking hubs

ToneTag's eKosha voice assistant aims to unlock credit for India's 72 million SMEs by transforming existing payment terminals into banking touchpoints, offering banks a low-cost route to expand reach.

ToneTag has launched eKosha, a voice-first artificial intelligence assistant that converts existing merchant payment terminals into banking access points. The system allows small business owners to execute core banking functions and apply for credit using spoken commands in local languages, entirely bypassing the need for a smartphone application.

The product targets a substantial but underserved segment of the Indian economy. According to the India SME Forum, the country's small and medium enterprises number over 72 million, employ more than 316 million people, and contribute roughly 31% of national GDP. Despite this economic weight, these businesses have largely missed out on formal credit due to limited financial awareness and complex loan processes.

A persistent gap remains between their rapid adoption of digital payments and their access to broader financial services like affordable loans. Historically, small merchants have relied on telephone calls to resolve basic queries about working capital limits or compliance paperwork. Using edge AI, eKosha processes a merchant's voice request in real time, allowing them to verbally request loan options and receive step-by-step application guidance through their existing payment terminal.

For financial institutions, the technology presents a distribution strategy to reach underserved businesses without the capital expenditure of building new physical branches. By utilizing existing retail payment infrastructure, banks can lower customer acquisition costs and improve service efficiency. The direct connection also enables institutions to cross-sell products like insurance and savings accounts without relying as heavily on third-party aggregators.

Scaling the platform will require clearing several operational hurdles. Widespread adoption hinges on whether ToneTag can guarantee data privacy, maintain high language processing accuracy, and seamlessly integrate with legacy bank systems. Ultimately, convincing merchants to trust an AI assistant with their financial data will dictate the platform's success.
