Citi Leads South Korea Investment Banking Rankings After Record SK Hynix IPO

Citigroup has captured a 16 percent market share in South Korea’s investment banking league table, highlighting a structural shift as major Asian corporations increasingly bypass domestic exchanges to raise capital globally.

Citigroup Global Markets Korea has secured the top position in the country’s investment banking wallet league table, driven by a surge in cross-border capital raising. According to Dealogic data announced on August 26, the bank now holds a 16 percent market share.

The lender has arranged $60 billion in funding for South Korean clients across international equity and bond markets year to date. This volume stems from 40 separate transactions, averaging more than one deal per week. This pace puts the firm on track for a record financial year.

The cornerstone of this performance was Citi’s role as lead manager for the $26.5 billion initial public offering of SK hynix (000660.KS) in the United States. This flotation represents the largest foreign IPO in American market history. It also stands as the biggest equity deal originating from an Asian market.

This dominance underscores a broader structural shift in Asian corporate finance. South Korea’s largest companies are increasingly bypassing local exchanges to tap deeper international capital pools. Consequently, global investment banks are becoming indispensable partners for the region's ongoing technology expansion.

Looking ahead, the bank anticipates sustained cross-border merger and acquisition activity. Pipeline momentum is expected to remain strong across key sectors, including technology, consumer goods, and healthcare.

CGMK CEO Park Jang-ho emphasized the strategic importance of the region as domestic firms actively pursue global expansion. "Korea is one of Citi's key markets globally," Park stated. "It is home to a growing class of world-class corporates and emerging champions who are increasingly using capital markets at competitive levels to fund growth ambitions."

Park noted that local enterprises are accelerating their international growth strategies. To support these ambitions, they are increasingly relying on the lender's worldwide network for advisory services and strategic capital. This dynamic ensures a steady pipeline of cross-border mandates for global financial institutions.
