Indian Markets Eye Cautious Open as Crude Drops on Strait of Hormuz Diplomacy

Indian benchmark indices are poised for a muted opening as declining crude oil prices and Middle East diplomatic efforts offset lingering concerns over sticky US inflation.

Indian stock markets are set for a subdued opening on Thursday, with early indicators pointing to a negative start despite easing energy prices. The Gift Nifty traded around 24,365, reflecting a discount of roughly 64 points from the previous Nifty futures close of 24,429. This follows Wednesday’s session, where the BSE Sensex fell 0.24 per cent to 77,472.94 and the Nifty 50 dropped 0.52 per cent to 24,207.75.

The near-term macroeconomic backdrop is being reshaped by diplomatic developments in the Middle East. Iran and Oman are reportedly close to finalising an agreement on managing the Strait of Hormuz, raising hopes for the reopening of the critical energy transit route. Consequently, Brent crude futures fell 0.7 per cent to $87.24 a barrel, while West Texas Intermediate declined to $81.67, marking their fourth and fifth consecutive sessions of losses.

Macro Backdrop and Market Strategy

Market participants view the retreat in oil prices as a tailwind for domestic equities. Ponmudi R, chief executive of Enrich Money, noted that the stabilisation of WTI crude improves the near-term outlook. This supports a constructive technical posture for the Bank Nifty, which continues to hold above key moving averages despite broader global uncertainty.

International markets are grappling with sticky inflation data. Wall Street closed lower after the US Personal Consumption Expenditures Price Index came in slightly above expectations, complicating the Federal Reserve’s policy trajectory. Investor focus has now shifted to Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh’s upcoming address at the Jackson Hole symposium for clarity on interest rates.

In the corporate sphere, technology sentiment received a boost from Nvidia’s latest quarterly results. The chipmaker forecast approximately 70 per cent revenue growth for fiscal 2028, alleviating investor anxieties regarding the sustainability of heavy artificial intelligence capital expenditures.

Domestically, analysts advise a selective approach amid expected index consolidation. Ajit Mishra, senior vice president of research at Religare Broking, identified the 24,000 to 24,100 zone as immediate support for the Nifty 50, with resistance at 24,400 to 24,500. He recommended focusing on relative strength in metal, auto, and select banking stocks.

For intraday trading, market analysts have highlighted specific opportunities across financial and industrial sectors. Recommended names include Karur Vysya Bank, State Bank of India, Computer Age Management Services, Ipca Laboratories, and APL Apollo Tubes, with strict adherence to disciplined risk management parameters.
