Asian Equities Steady as Oil Retreats Ahead of Nvidia Earnings and Fed Speech

Global markets are pausing for breath as falling oil prices provide temporary relief, shifting investor focus to Nvidia’s crucial earnings report and upcoming signals from the Federal Reserve on interest rates.

Asian equities traded with little change while Nasdaq 100 futures dropped 0.3 percent and S&P 500 contracts edged 0.1 percent lower. A drop in crude oil prices offered brief relief to risk assets, with Brent falling 1.7 percent to around $87 a barrel after Iran and Oman discussed an interim framework to resume shipping through the Strait of Hormuz.

This retreat in energy costs helped push 10-year US Treasury yields down seven basis points to 4.63 percent on Tuesday. Gold remained steady near $4,655 an ounce following a five-day rally, and Bitcoin held its position around $78,500.

Attention now turns to Wednesday’s Nvidia earnings report, which will serve as a critical test for the artificial intelligence trade. The sector has recently faced selling pressure as investors question whether massive capital expenditures in AI technology will yield proportional financial returns.

Analysts project the chipmaker’s revenue nearly doubled from a year earlier to $92 billion last quarter, surpassing the full-year revenue of any rival. Mark Malek at Siebert Financial stated, “Nvidia is operating on all cylinders and they’re doing absolutely everything correctly at this point,” adding, “We’re anticipating good news here, but so is everybody.”

Beyond corporate earnings, macroeconomic data and central bank guidance will dictate market direction later this week. Investors will scrutinize the US personal consumption expenditures price index on Wednesday for clues on inflation, following data showing US consumer confidence dropping to a seven-month low in August.

Jeffrey Roach, chief economist at LPL Financial, observed, “Consumers are optimistic about today but increasingly nervous about tomorrow.” He warned that “although employment conditions remain solid, fading expectations for income growth may act as a headwind to spending.”

The week culminates on Friday at the Jackson Hole Symposium, where Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh will deliver his first major speech in the role. Market participants are seeking clearer signals regarding his assessment of the broader economy and the future trajectory of monetary policy.

In trade developments, the United States is currently weighing additional trade measures against Canada in response to recent retaliatory actions. This geopolitical friction adds another layer of complexity to the global economic outlook.
