Sony Restricts Crunchyroll Merchandise Store to Premium Subscription Tiers

Sony is restricting access to its Crunchyroll merchandise shop to higher-priced subscription tiers, a monetization shift that risks alienating its core consumer base amid broader corporate price increases.

Sony has placed its Crunchyroll merchandise store behind a paywall, restricting purchasing access exclusively to subscribers of its Mega or Ultimate fan tiers. The base Fan subscription, priced at $10 a month, no longer grants entry to the shop.

To access the store, which features exclusive collaborations, drops and premium releases, users must now pay $14 a month for the Mega tier or $18 a month for the Ultimate tier. Annual bundles for these tiers cost $140 and $180, respectively.

This strategic pivot represents an aggressive monetization of Crunchyroll’s e-commerce channel, effectively charging consumers for the privilege of spending additional money on merchandise. For investors, the move signals an attempt to extract higher average revenue per user from the anime platform’s most dedicated segment. However, alienating the broader subscriber base could offset these gains if churn rates increase significantly.

The policy has triggered immediate backlash across social media, with users threatening to cancel subscriptions and source anime products from competitors. One user characterized the policy by stating, "Paying for the right to shop has got to be the worst thing I have seen happen to the Anime scene in a while."

The controversy unfolds as parent company Sony navigates broader pricing pressures across its entertainment divisions. In May 2026, Sony increased prices across all PlayStation Plus tiers by $1 to $2.

Furthermore, Sony recently cited component shortages and rising costs to justify significant hardware price hikes. The digital PlayStation 5 now retails for $600, the disc version for $650, and the PlayStation 5 Pro for $900, marking increases of $150 to $200 above their original release prices.

Although Crunchyroll attempted to soften the announcement with a 50 percent discount on select store items, the promotional offer has failed to mitigate consumer frustration. The company has not provided further strategic justification for gating its retail operations behind premium subscription walls.
