SpaceX posts natural gas trading roles to secure power and rocket fuel

SpaceX is recruiting a natural gas trader to build an in-house trading desk, highlighting the aerospace and technology giant's aggressive push into energy infrastructure to fuel its expanding manufacturing and spaceflight operations.

SpaceX is recruiting a professional to build and lead a natural gas trading team focused on physical and financial natural gas markets. The role is designed to secure the fuel and electricity required for the company’s expanding manufacturing and space exploration operations. This internal desk will manage the complex logistics of sourcing energy for both terrestrial facilities and orbital launches.

This hiring push underscores a broader strategy of vertical integration as the company scales its industrial footprint. SpaceX recently announced plans to construct its own gas-fired power plants to supply electricity for a massive semiconductor manufacturing facility it is developing in Texas alongside Tesla. Surging power demand from data centers and new factories has broadly driven the need for new gas plants across the sector.

The energy requirements extend beyond the terrestrial power grid directly to the launch pad. The company’s massive Starship rocket relies on super-chilled methane, which is the primary ingredient in natural gas, combined with liquid oxygen for propulsion. Securing a reliable and cost-effective supply of this specific fuel is critical for the company's ambitious flight cadence.

To guarantee supply, the company is looking far beyond traditional procurement methods. President and chief operating officer Gwynne Shotwell told CNBC in June that the company plans to build its own gas pipelines and even drill for natural gas. She described these infrastructure projects as "huge investments to develop our own propellant and bring it to the rocket."

The move mirrors a wider trend among major technology firms facing surging power demands from data centers and new factories. Peers like Meta and OpenAI have similarly signaled intentions to enter power trading to manage their expanding energy footprints. As artificial intelligence and advanced manufacturing grow, securing dedicated energy supply chains has become a core operational priority.

The new trading positions will be based in Cape Canaveral, Florida, or Starbase, Texas. This geographic choice bypasses traditional energy trading hubs like Houston, Calgary, or Stamford, Connecticut. The job postings explicitly state that remote work will not be considered for the roles.

SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment regarding the new trading desk. The company has yet to clarify how the new team will interact with existing energy suppliers.
