GE Vernova backlog reaches $176 billion on surging AI power demand

GE Vernova’s remaining performance obligations climbed 37 percent year-over-year to $176 billion, signaling sustained investor returns through the 2030s as artificial intelligence infrastructure drives historic demand for grid and gas turbine equipment.

GE Vernova reported a remaining performance obligation of $176 billion at the close of the second quarter. The figure represents a 37 percent increase from the same period last year and includes $13 billion in recent growth. This massive order book provides the power equipment manufacturer with revenue visibility extending well into the 2030s.

The scale of the backlog dwarfs the $38 billion in revenue the company generated last year. For investors and market professionals, this disparity highlights a structural shift in global energy markets rather than a temporary cyclical spike. The massive order book de-risks future cash flows by locking in long-term contracts.

Artificial intelligence infrastructure build-outs are the primary catalyst for this expansion. Data center construction is creating historic demand for grid transmission, switchgear, and transformers. GE Vernova is capitalizing on this trend by supplying essential power infrastructure to support the rapidly growing digital economy.

Natural gas equipment is also experiencing accelerated orders as utilities seek reliable generation. The company supplies approximately half of the global gas turbine capacity, and its existing equipment base currently generates roughly one-quarter of the world's electricity. This dominant market position places the firm at the center of global baseload and peak power generation.

Natural gas is increasingly utilized as a bridge fuel because it emits 50 percent less carbon than coal. It also provides the flexible and reliable power necessary to stabilize grids that depend on intermittent renewable energy sources. This dynamic is securing long-term contracts for the company's turbine divisions.

GE Vernova’s HA-Class turbines are specifically engineered to deliver large-scale baseload power, generating between 400 megawatts and 800 megawatts per block. Meanwhile, its aeroderivative turbines are designed to meet peak energy demands. These smaller units are particularly well suited for backing up renewables and providing on-site power for data centers and remote facilities.

The convergence of AI-driven electricity needs and the transition to lower-carbon baseload power has created a highly favorable environment for the company. The $176 billion backlog confirms that institutional capital is heavily weighting the energy transition toward reliable, gas-supported grid infrastructure.
