Manchester United agrees £70m deal for Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba
Manchester United has committed £70 million to secure 22-year-old midfielder Carlos Baleba from Brighton, pushing the club’s summer transfer expenditure to approximately £153 million as it restructures its squad assets.
Manchester United has reached an agreement to acquire Brighton midfielder Carlos Baleba for £70 million. The transaction structure comprises an initial £65 million payment with £5 million in potential add-ons, while Brighton has successfully retained a sell-on clause. The 22-year-old Cameroon international is scheduled to undergo a medical this weekend following a late Friday evening breakthrough in negotiations.
This acquisition elevates Manchester United’s total summer transfer expenditure to approximately £153 million. The finalized fee represents a significant reduction from Brighton’s earlier valuation as the 2025 transfer deadline approached, demonstrating effective capital deployment and negotiation leverage by United’s front office.
The investment incorporates calculated risk, as Baleba is currently sidelined with an ankle injury sustained during Brighton’s pre-season training camp in Austria. Nevertheless, the player’s explicit desire to join Old Trafford accelerated discussions, allowing United to secure a highly rated young asset who originally joined Brighton from Lille in 2023.
Strategically, this move addresses critical midfield restructuring following Casemiro’s departure upon contract expiry. The roster calculus shifted further when Manuel Ugarte, who was also expected to leave this summer, suffered a serious knee injury while on World Cup duty.
Baleba will integrate into a reinforced midfield portfolio that already features recent arrivals Andrey Santos from Chelsea and Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa. Alongside England international Kobbie Mainoo, the new signing provides Michael Carrick with essential depth, athleticism, and energy to manage the squad’s operational demands.
Carrick has recently urged the club’s board to approve further strategic signings to bolster the team's title bid. These finalized roster adjustments are designed to build upon the club’s strong start to the new season, commencing with Saturday’s Premier League away fixture against newly promoted Hull City.
