Dow Jones| Nasdaq | US Stock Market Today | Live: US futures subdued as bond yields rebound; Walmart slides after results
Dow Jones Today | US Stock Market Live: The three main US equity indexes closed lower on Thursday as rising Treasury yields dented risk appetite, disappointing results from retail bellwether Walmart soured investors on the consumer sector and rallying oil prices fanned inflation worries.
Bitcoin, the world's largest cryptocurrency, rose 3.4% and pushed through resistance levels that had held since early June, moving past the $70,000 mark to highs of about $71,700. Ether gained 3.3%, its highest level in over three months.
Minutes from the U.S. Federal Reserve's July meeting, released on Wednesday, had shown concern about inflation deepening at the central bank, with "several" policymakers ready to raise interest rates and "many" saying a hike in borrowing costs will be needed if inflation does not decline to the central bank's 2% target.
Oil prices rose 2.7%, extending gains for the fifth consecutive session on stalled U.S.-Iran peace talks and Middle East supply disruptions.
The retail bellwether dropped 5.8% in premarket trading after missing Wall Street expectations for quarterly comparable sales as shoppers pulled back on spending in the face of rising gas prices.
US stock index futures were largely muted on Thursday as government bond yields resumed their climb and investors assessed Walmart’s results. Dow E-minis fell 103 points, or 0.19%, while S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 E-minis slipped 0.04% and 0.05%, respectively.
