Brent Crude Tops $92 as Trump Unveils Sweeping Economic Measures Against Iran

Oil prices extended their rally to a fifth consecutive session as aggressive new US sanctions threaten to disrupt global energy flows and strain ties with major Asian buyers.

Brent crude climbed above $92 a barrel, marking a fifth straight session of gains, after US President Donald Trump announced a stringent new package of economic measures targeting Iran. West Texas Intermediate for October delivery also advanced, trading near $85 a barrel.

Trump characterized the new restrictions as economic warfare and isolation on an unprecedented scale, dubbing the move an economic D-Day. He explicitly called on all United States allies to back Washington in this effort.

The administration warned that any country permitting its financial institutions, companies, airports, or government bodies to assist Iran will face severe economic repercussions. While specific penalties were not detailed, the directive demands an immediate halt to smuggling, cash transfers, exchange house operations, and the use of ship registries to support Tehran.

This escalation carries profound implications for global energy markets and geopolitical alliances. The intensified pressure is expected to strain relations with nations that continue to purchase Iranian crude, most notably China, which remains Iran’s largest market.

Crude prices have surged sharply this year as tensions between Washington and Tehran have centered on the Strait of Hormuz. Although the Trump administration has recently pivoted from military action toward economic coercion, US forces are currently maintaining a naval blockade of Iranian ports.

Despite heightened risks to maritime shipping, indications suggest that some Iranian crude continues to be transported covertly through the strait. The economic squeeze was compounded a day earlier when the United Arab Emirates severed economic ties with Tehran.

The UAE accused Iran of launching ballistic missiles at its territory, prompting the break in relations. Because the Emirates serves as a major financial and commercial hub for Iranian businesses and individuals, this withdrawal is poised to deepen Iran’s economic isolation significantly.

For investors, the convergence of a naval blockade, covert shipping risks, and sweeping secondary sanctions creates a persistent volatility premium in oil prices. The foreshadowing of these measures by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent last week signals a coordinated strategy to restrict Iranian revenue streams.
