AIA First-Half Operating Profit Rises 11% on Strong Hong Kong and Asia Sales

AIA Group reported an 11 percent increase in first-half operating profit, beating analyst estimates and signaling robust demand for life and health insurance across Asian markets despite isolated regional weaknesses.

AIA Group posted an 11 percent increase in first-half operating profit, reaching US$4.16 billion on a constant currency basis. The Asia-Pacific insurer’s earnings per share climbed to 39.95 US cents, surpassing the US$3.94 billion consensus forecast among analysts.

This growth underscores the resilience of the regional life and health insurance sector, driven primarily by robust sales in Hong Kong and mainland China. The company also noted continued expansion across its Southeast Asian footprint, reinforcing the sector’s structural tailwinds.

The value of new business, a critical metric for assessing sales momentum and future profitability, rose 10 percent year on year to a record US$3.21 billion. While this specific figure fell marginally short of the US$3.25 billion consensus expectation, the broader operational momentum clearly remained strong enough to drive overall profit beats.

Out of the 18 markets where the Hong Kong-based company operates, 17 delivered new business growth. Thailand stood as the sole exception, reporting a decline in new business volumes during the period.

Group chief executive and president Lee Yuan Siong highlighted sustained appetite from mainland Chinese visitors. He noted that the value of new business remained broadly stable against a high comparative in 2025, while increasing quarter-on-quarter in the first half.

Lee emphasized that the region continues to offer the most compelling growth opportunity for life and health insurance. He pointed to powerful structural tailwinds that underpin exceptional long-term prospects, creating substantial demand for the company's professional advice and differentiated products.

Reflecting confidence in its financial position, AIA declared an interim dividend of 53.9 HK cents per share. This represents a 10 percent increase from the 49 HK cents distributed a year earlier, rewarding shareholders amid the profitable expansion.

For investors, the results validate the insurer’s strategy of capitalizing on demographic shifts and rising wealth across the Asia-Pacific region. The ability to exceed aggregate profit expectations while lifting the dividend payout demonstrates effective capital allocation and sustained pricing power in core markets.
