AIA Group reports 10% rise in first-half new business value to $3.21 billion

AIA Group reports 10% rise in first-half new business value to $3.21 billion

The Hong Kong-listed insurer met internal consensus expectations for new business value while raising its interim dividend, signaling resilience despite emerging tax pressures on mainland buyers.

AIA Group reported a 10 percent increase in its half-year value of new business, reaching $3.21 billion on a constant exchange rate basis. The result matched the $3.2 billion consensus estimate compiled internally by the insurer.

Value of new business serves as a primary indicator of expected future profits generated from new premiums, acting as a key barometer for the insurer's future growth trajectory. Stripping out Thailand, this metric expanded by 14 percent year-over-year on a constant currency basis. This double-digit expansion reflects broad-based growth across all of the company's distribution channels and operational segments.

The financial results arrive during a period of heightened regulatory scrutiny for Hong Kong-listed insurers operating in the region. Earlier this month, market participants reacted to reports that Chinese tax authorities are beginning to enforce a 20 percent personal income tax on returns generated from Hong Kong insurance policies. This stricter oversight of offshore investments has sparked concerns among investors that demand from mainland customers could soften as a result.

Despite these emerging regional friction points, AIA's leadership maintains a constructive outlook on the broader market dynamics. "Asia remains the most compelling growth opportunity for life and health insurance," stated Lee Yuan Siong, the company's group chief executive and president. He pointed to structural tailwinds driving product demand and supporting long-term expansion across the region, suggesting the underlying fundamentals remain intact.

The insurer also rewarded shareholders with a higher interim payout alongside the operational update. The company declared a dividend of 53.90 Hong Kong cents, equivalent to $0.069, per share. This represents a 10 percent increase from the previous year, calculated at an exchange rate of 7.8409 Hong Kong dollars to the U.S. dollar.
