Poor Sleep Reduces Working Life Expectancy for Over-50s by Up to Nine Months

A new Finnish study reveals that severe sleep disturbances significantly reduce working life expectancy for employees over 50, highlighting a hidden risk to labor force participation and a growing imperative for corporate health interventions.

Severe sleep disturbances can reduce the working life of employees over the age of 50 by up to nine months, according to new research from the University of Turku in Finland. The findings draw on data from the Finnish Public Sector and Health and Social Support studies, surveying the sleeping habits of workers after they turned 50.

Researchers found that moderate sleep disruptions cost workers nearly five months of their career within the 50 to 68 age range, while severe disturbances resulted in eight fewer months. These losses applied regardless of gender or job type, though the extremes showed sharper divides.

Professional women with no sleep disturbances enjoyed the longest working life expectancy at almost 14 years. Conversely, men in routine jobs suffering from severe sleep disturbances had the shortest expectancy, at nearly 12 and a half years.

The study categorized nightly sleep length, defining short as under seven hours, mid-range as seven to 8.5 hours, and long as nine hours or more. Both short and mid-range sleep durations correlated with a working life expectancy of 13 years and two months after age 50.

Long nightly sleep duration, however, was associated with a shorter working life expectancy of 12 years and five months. Dr Saana Myllyntausta, the study’s lead investigator, noted this was linked to poorer health outcomes that might explain the abbreviated career span.

"It was surprising that we found no differences between those with short sleep duration and those with mid-range sleep duration," Dr Myllyntausta said. She emphasized that long sleep duration has been previously linked to earlier retirement and adverse health metrics.

Workforce and Market Implications

For employers and investors, these findings underscore a material risk to workforce participation and productivity among aging demographics. With previous studies suggesting a third of UK workers experience chronic sleep deprivation, the economic drag of reduced labor supply could intensify.

The research highlights a tangible opportunity for occupational health services and corporate wellness providers. Dr Myllyntausta pointed to cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia and workplace health promotion interventions as effective methods to support middle-aged workers.

Supporting sleep health is particularly critical for employees with lower socioeconomic status to sustain workforce participation. The researchers noted, however, that the study could not account for underlying health conditions, mental health, or specific working conditions like shift work.
