Hertha Metals produces magnet-grade iron to secure US rare earth supply chain
Houston-based Hertha Metals has achieved 99.95% purity in domestic iron production, offering a critical solution for US manufacturers facing 2027 deadlines to eliminate Chinese-sourced rare earth magnets.
Hertha Metals announced Tuesday that its demonstration-scale facility in Conroe, Texas, has successfully produced iron at 99.95% purity. This 3N5 specification officially meets the strict requirements of leading rare earth magnet manufacturers.
The breakthrough addresses a critical vulnerability in the United States supply chain for strategic materials. Defense manufacturers are currently racing to qualify domestic alternatives ahead of a January 1, 2027 deadline to reduce reliance on Chinese-origin magnets.
For investors and market professionals, this development signals a tangible shift in the domestic commodities landscape. Establishing a fully domestic source for magnet-grade iron reduces exposure to geopolitical supply shocks and aligns with federal mandates for critical mineral independence.
High-purity iron constitutes approximately 70% of the weight in neodymium magnets. These components are essential for electric vehicle motors, wind turbines, and advanced defense systems, yet the United States currently imports almost all of this foundational material.
Chief Executive Laureen Meroueh noted that recent reshoring initiatives have often overlooked foundational inputs. "Most of the reshoring efforts have concentrated on the rare earth elements and finished magnets," she said. She added that hitting the 3N5 benchmark using domestic iron ore and natural gas closes a major supply gap, allowing local magnet producers to source the material at a lower cost.
The company achieves this output using a proprietary process known as FLEXHERS, or flexible fuel hydrogen electric reduction smelting. This method integrates electric arc furnace technology with either natural gas or hydrogen to yield high-grade iron and steel.
Meroueh pointed out that high-purity iron is one of the least visible materials behind magnets powering electric vehicles and defense systems. "We’ve now demonstrated that we can produce magnet-grade iron domestically, creating a new pathway to build a domestic supply chain," she stated.
Capitalizing on this operational milestone, Hertha Metals plans to break ground this fall on its next facility, named Chalyx. This expanded commercial operation will be dedicated to producing high-purity iron at scale specifically for rare earth magnet producers.
