Synchrony Financial partners with OpenAI to power consumer portals

Synchrony Financial has partnered with OpenAI to integrate artificial intelligence into its consumer portals and internal operations, highlighting the AI company's push to build a commerce platform ahead of a potential public offering.

Synchrony Financial announced a collaboration with OpenAI on Monday to integrate the artificial intelligence company's models into its consumer portals. The credit card issuer, which provides cards for brands including Amazon, Walmart and Lowe's, is also launching a dedicated ChatGPT plugin.

This new plugin will allow consumers to browse marketplace deals, promotional financing options, and partner offers directly through the AI interface. Separately, Synchrony is deploying OpenAI's latest models across its internal enterprise to accelerate its own product development cycles.

The partnership represents a strategic move by the company to maintain its relevance in an evolving retail landscape. As artificial intelligence agents increasingly assist consumers with researching and purchasing items, Synchrony aims to use these tools to deliver smoother online shopping experiences.

Kaylin Voss, vice president of Americas and Industries at OpenAI, noted that the technology is reshaping the commercial landscape. "AI is creating an opportunity to reimagine the entire commerce experience, from how customers discover products to how they pay, earn rewards, and build loyalty," Voss stated.

She added that the card issuer is tackling this shift comprehensively by utilizing the technology externally and internally. "Synchrony is approaching that opportunity from both sides: bringing OpenAI into the experiences it creates for customers and partners, while deploying our most advanced models and tools across its own enterprise," Voss explained.

For OpenAI, the alliance underscores a critical strategic pivot as the company prepares for a massive potential initial public offering. The collaboration adds to mounting pressure on the AI developer to transform ChatGPT into a broader platform for online commerce.

Although the collaboration is currently in its early stages, it highlights the growing intersection of retail credit and generative AI. The integration is designed to keep the card issuer competitive as shopping behaviors shift toward automated AI agents.
