Gift Nifty signals flat open for Indian stocks as index slips below key support

Early indicators suggest Indian benchmark indices will struggle for direction on Monday as the broader market digests a gradual two-week decline and tests critical technical support levels.

Indian equity benchmarks are poised for a muted start to the week, with early derivatives trading indicating a flat open. The Gift Nifty was changing hands at 24,390 by early morning, oscillating near Friday’s spot close of 24,366 and sitting roughly 40 points below the previous session's finish.

This cautious setup follows a period of consolidation for the broader market. The flagship 50-stock index has spent recent sessions trapped in a narrow band between 24,300 and 24,400, reflecting investor hesitation.

Market technicians note a gradual downward drift on daily charts over the past fortnight, eroding crucial sentiment barriers. The index recently failed to hold the 24,400 threshold, leaving it vulnerable to further downside pressure.

Vaishali Parekh, vice president of technical research at Prabhudas Lilladher, identified the next major floor for the benchmark. “The Nifty 50 index would now have the next important support of 24,000 zone and would anticipate for a decent revival to sustain the bias,” she said.

Parekh also outlined the ceiling that bulls must clear to reverse the current cautious trend. “On the upside, the important 200-period MA at 24,700 zone is the resistance hurdle and would expect to breach above in the coming days,” she added.

The financial sector is exhibiting similar indecision, with the banking index hovering near its 200-period moving average of 57,500. This prolonged consolidation has trapped the sector in a tight range, requiring a significant catalyst to establish a clear directional trend.

Parekh emphasized the necessity of clearing specific thresholds to confirm a directional shift in the financial space. “The Bank Nifty index would need a decisive breach above the tough resistance hurdle at 58,600 zone, whereas the important and major support would be positioned near the 100-period MA at 56,000 level which needs to be sustained to maintain the trend intact,” she noted.

Targeted stock selections

Despite the broader index consolidation, technical analysts are identifying specific mid-cap and sectoral opportunities for intraday traders. Focus remains on companies showing relative strength or distinct chart patterns independent of the benchmark's lethargy.

Parekh highlighted Arvind as a primary candidate, suggesting an entry around ₹571.85 with a target of ₹600 and a risk limit at ₹560. Man Industries (India) was also flagged for a potential move to ₹630 from an entry near ₹599.45, provided it does not breach a stop at ₹588.

In the chemical sector, Sumitomo Chemical India rounds out the technical selections for the session. Analysts project an upside target of ₹580 if the stock is accumulated near ₹564.95, with downside protection placed at ₹552.
