Thiel Fund Acquires $76 Million Stake in Argentine Shale Exporter Vista

Hedge fund Thiel Macro LLC has built a major position in Argentina’s leading oil exporter, signaling growing Wall Street confidence in the country’s liberalizing energy sector under President Javier Milei.

Thiel Macro LLC reported holding nearly 1.2 million shares in Vista Energy SAB at the end of the second quarter. The position was valued at approximately $76 million as of June 30, according to a US regulatory filing on Friday.

This holding now ranks as the fund’s second-largest position, trailing only Amazon.com Inc. Vista Energy stands as the sole non-US company currently listed in the hedge fund’s portfolio.

The investment deepens the US tech billionaire’s footprint in Argentina, following his recent purchase of a mansion in Buenos Aires. Thiel has also spent considerable time in the country this year, including a notable April meeting with President Javier Milei.

During their discussion, the two libertarians focused on the durability of Argentina’s ongoing free-market reforms and the potential for wealth taxes. Milei has spent the year dismantling decades of heavy economic regulation.

Founded in 2017 by Miguel Galuccio, Vista has rapidly become Argentina’s largest oil exporter. The company currently produces the equivalent of 160,000 barrels of oil and gas a day, exporting 70 percent of that volume.

Vista is positioning for further output growth following recent acquisitions, capitalizing on the expansion of the Vaca Muerta shale basin. Total production in the formation is now surpassing 1 million barrels, fundamentally altering the nation’s economic trajectory.

President Milei’s policies have successfully reopened international capital markets to local drillers and infrastructure developers. This shift is accelerating critical buildouts, including the VMOS shale oil pipeline and port project.

Vista holds a stake in the VMOS infrastructure, which is scheduled for completion next year. The facility will enable Argentina to route significantly larger crude volumes to global buyers.

Thiel’s move reflects a broader influx of American capital into the Patagonian shale patch. Major players like Chevron Corp are expanding their regional operations, while billionaire wildcatter Harold Hamm has also entered the market.

For global energy investors, these developments offer a rare combination of high-growth shale assets and a government actively removing investment barriers. The convergence of private capital and state-level deregulation is quickly making Argentina a focal point for emerging market energy portfolios.
