Strong El Niño unlikely to erase Europe winter LNG import deficit
Although meteorological models point to the strongest El Niño in a decade for the upcoming winter, the warming effect is expected to fall short of eliminating Europe's need for increased liquefied natural gas imports amid Middle East supply disruptions.
Meteorological forecasts indicate a near certainty of a strong El Niño forming for the 2026-2027 winter, potentially the most intense since 2015. However, energy analysts at Rystad Energy calculate that this weather pattern will not generate enough warmth to offset Europe's growing need for liquefied natural gas.
The stakes for European energy markets are unusually high this season due to the ongoing US-Iran war. Hostilities in the Middle East have curtailed deliveries from the Persian Gulf and driven up prices, making any weather-related demand destruction highly consequential for traders.
To match last winter's import volumes, regional temperatures would need to exceed historical averages by at least 2 degrees Celsius. Rystad Energy projects storage levels will reach 76 percent capacity by November 1, requiring an additional 15.15 million tonnes of LNG imports through June 2027 just to balance the market.
Under a moderate warming scenario of a 1-degree Celsius temperature increase, European gas demand would fall but still require at least 7 million tonnes more than the previous winter. This baseline trajectory provides mild support for natural gas prices by keeping import demand on an upward path.
A full 2-degree Celsius anomaly across the winter months would displace enough heating demand to stabilize import volumes, creating a bearish pricing environment for gas markets. Yet historical records show this extreme warming threshold was only breached outright in December 2015 and February 2024.
Current models assign an 81 percent probability to the Pacific temperature index rising by 2.0 degrees, with a 100 percent chance of an El Niño event materializing over the next nine months. But global ocean anomalies do not guarantee uniform regional outcomes, as Western Europe warms more consistently than the south due to interactions with the North Atlantic Oscillation.
The unpredictability of local weather was evident in January 2016, when a massive El Niño coincided with a severe cold-air outbreak across East Asia. Market participants are therefore advised to price in the moderate warming scenario while monitoring forecast revisions that could tilt the balance toward extreme demand destruction.
