Reddit gets S&P 500 boost: What investors need to know

Reddit is set to become an S&P 500 constituent before the market opens on August 18, 2026. The company will replace AvalonBay Communities, which is being acquired by Equity Residential.
The inclusion is expected to generate buying from index-tracking mutual funds and ETFs, which need to adjust their portfolios to reflect Reddit's addition to the benchmark. This anticipated institutional demand helped fuel the after-hours rally.
Reddit, which went public in 2024, will become only the second pure-play social media company in the S&P 500 after Meta Platforms. Its entry marks a significant milestone for the platform as it moves into the large-cap benchmark.
Despite the latest surge, Reddit shares had been under pressure. The stock was down about 31% year-to-date as of Thursday's close and was trading well below its previous highs above $270.
The growing use of AI-powered search could pressure traffic coming from traditional search engines. At the same time, Reddit's large volume of user-generated content and data could make the platform valuable for AI training, search and other AI applications.
Reddit's after-hours rally was primarily driven by the S&P 500 inclusion announcement and expectations of passive-fund buying. The move provides a near-term catalyst for RDDT, although concerns surrounding traffic trends and the impact of AI on search remain important risks.
