MLB All-Star Derby's $1M Payout Outshines Rival Leagues' Prizes

MLB All-Star Derby's $1M Payout Outshines Rival Leagues' Prizes

St. Louis Cardinals outfielder Jordan Walker's $1 million Home Run Derby victory underscores a growing financial and viewership divide between Major League Baseball's mid-season showcase and the all-star events of other major North American sports leagues.

Jordan Walker secured a $1 million prize by defeating hometown favorite Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies in the Home Run Derby. The event preceded Tuesday's MLB All-Star Game at a sold-out Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. The single-night payout immediately surpassed Walker's entire $799,400 regular-season salary with the St. Louis Cardinals.

That windfall highlights a stark disparity in how North American sports leagues compensate players during their marquee off-days. The NBA’s Slam Dunk Contest winner, Keshad Johnson of the Miami Heat, earned a prize that was $890,000 less than Walker's take. Damian Lillard, who won the NBA's 3-point contest while with the Milwaukee Bucks, received just $60,000.

The NFL offered no prize money at all for its various Pro Bowl skill competitions. Those events ranged from Precision Passing to Kick Tac Toe. The league did manage to hold its 2026 All-Star events, unlike its hockey counterpart.

The NHL cancelled its planned 2026 All-Star events at UBS Arena, the home of the New York Islanders. Officials cited a desire to focus on the 2026 Winter Olympics. A replacement "send-off" celebration for Team USA also failed to materialize.

Baseball's willingness to commit seven figures to a single exhibition event appears justified by audience metrics. Last year’s MLB All-Star Game in Atlanta drew 7.2 million viewers. Both the 2025 NBA All-Star Game and the NFL Pro Bowl drew significantly less, with 4.7 million viewers each.

Walker's individual derby check also dwarfed the team-level payouts in other sports. The winning "U.S. Stars" squad at the 2025 NBA All-Star Game split a total purse of $1.8 million. Walker took home more than half of that entire team fund by himself.

Rival leagues have repeatedly overhauled their formats to combat widespread player and fan apathy. The NFL replaced its traditional tackle game with flag football. The NBA cycled through captain-driven drafts, targeted-score quarters, and this year's three-team format.

MLB, conversely, stripped away the gimmicks after a brief experiment tying the game to World Series home-field advantage. The American League's 4-0 victory on Tuesday marked its 11th win in 13 years. A traditional exhibition format is still commanding a premium financial position in the North American sports marketplace.
