Indian equities face lower open as indices test key support levels
Mixed global cues and technical indicators suggest India's benchmark stock indices will open lower on Friday, testing crucial support bands amid a broader consolidation phase.
India's benchmark equity indices are poised for a lower opening on Friday, tracking mixed global signals and muted early trading indicators. The Gift Nifty traded around 24,439, reflecting a 29-point discount to the previous close of Nifty futures as the market navigates a choppy consolidation phase.
Market divergence was evident during Thursday's session, highlighting the current lack of clear directional momentum. The Sensex added 113.61 points, or 0.15 per cent, to close at 78,079.96, while the Nifty 50 slipped 40.10 points to finish at 24,395.85. The financial sector also faced pressure, with the Bank Nifty index dropping 0.43 per cent to end at 57,635.
For investors monitoring short-term momentum, technical formations suggest buying interest is emerging at lower valuations. Sachin Gupta, vice-president of research at Choice Broking, noted that the Sensex found support near its 20-day exponential moving average. He pointed to a relative strength index of 53.93 and a put-call ratio of 1.00, indicating a balanced derivatives setup with a sideways outlook.
Market professionals are watching specific price bands to gauge the next move for the broader market. Nagaraj Shetti, a senior technical research analyst at HDFC Securities, highlighted the 24,200 to 24,300 zone as critical support for the Nifty 50, with immediate resistance capped at 24,500. Osho Krishan at Angel One added that an inside-bar pattern reflects bear exhaustion, though a break below the 24,265 swing low could expose the index to 24,150.
The current market structure prompts a cautious approach for equity allocators, with sustained ranges required to maintain the current setup. Holding the 77,400 to 77,600 zone on the Sensex is viewed as essential, while a push above 78,500 could reignite fresh buying momentum. In the financial sector, Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities identified the 57,200 to 57,100 zone as immediate support for the Bank Nifty, noting that a sustained move above 58,000 would be required to extend the current pullback toward 58,800.
