Nuclea acquires Moltex nuclear reactor and fuel assets
Nuclea’s purchase of Moltex Energy’s reactor and fuel recycling patents out of administration broadens its technology portfolio to meet growing demand for low-carbon power.
Nuclea Energy has entered a definitive agreement to acquire the advanced nuclear technology assets of Moltex Energy Limited, which is currently in administration. The deal transfers a portfolio of molten salt reactor designs and nuclear fuel recycling technology from the distressed developer to Nuclea, which is currently building its own lead-cooled microreactor.
The transaction consolidates intellectual property in the advanced nuclear sector as global demand for dependable, low-carbon baseload power accelerates. “We believe the nuclear sector is entering a sustained period of strategic investment driven by the increasing competition in nuclear developments between east and west, energy security, grid reliability, industrial electrification and growing demand for large volumes of dependable, low-carbon power driven by the new digital age,” Nuclea chief executive Josef Freundorfer said.
The acquired portfolio represents more than a decade of development backed by over C$96 million ($68 million) in private and public funding. Contributors to the technology’s development include the Canadian federal government, the Province of New Brunswick, and the U.S. Department of Energy through its ARPA-E programs.
For investors, the primary value lies in Moltex’s intellectual property and regulatory progress. The transfer includes 80 granted patents across nine families covering nuclear fuel, reactor chemistry, and materials, alongside nine pending patents for its Waste To Stable Salt recycling process.
The technology has also cleared early regulatory hurdles in Canada. Moltex’s Stable Salt Reactor–Wasteburner, an advanced molten salt fast reactor, completed Phase 1 of the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission’s Vendor Design Review. The recycling technology is advancing under a service level agreement with the same regulator.
Freundorfer noted the acquisition is intended to broaden Nuclea’s market position by adding complementary reactor designs and fuel-cycle capabilities to its flagship Morpheus micro-modular reactor. The Morpheus system is a factory-built, lead-cooled microreactor currently in development.
The Moltex assets were originally built in collaboration with major industry and research players. Development partners include Ontario Power Generation, CANDU Energy, which is now part of AtkinsRéalis, the Electric Power Research Institute, and U.S. national laboratories including Argonne and Oak Ridge.
