Standard Chartered JV Anchorpoint launches Hong Kong dollar stablecoin

Anchorpoint Financial has rolled out a regulated Hong Kong dollar stablecoin to institutional investors, marking a key step in the city's push to integrate tokenised money into traditional finance.

Anchorpoint Financial, a joint venture backed by Standard Chartered, Animoca Brands and Hong Kong Telecommunications, has commenced the first phase of its Hong Kong dollar-backed stablecoin launch. The digital token, known as HKD At Par (HKDAP), is a cryptocurrency designed to maintain a constant value pegged to the local fiat currency. It is initially available exclusively to institutional distributors and professional investors.

Authorised distributors will facilitate direct conversions between HKDAP and traditional fiat currency for corporate users and professional clients. The primary objective at this early stage is to embed the stablecoin into existing commercial infrastructure. Distributors are expected to draw on their established client networks to integrate HKDAP into routine financial activities.

The restricted rollout reflects a deliberate strategy to build institutional trust in digital assets before expanding access to a wider audience. By adopting a business-to-business-to-consumer model, Anchorpoint is utilising third-party networks to prove the practical utility of tokenised money in actual financial activities. This method allows the joint venture to demonstrate operational viability in wholesale finance without immediately taking on the compliance and liquidity risks of a mass-market launch.

Looking ahead, the company is targeting broader retail adoption as early as the end of 2026, depending on market conditions. The commercial debut follows the Hong Kong Monetary Authority's decision in early April to approve Anchorpoint and HSBC to issue fiat-backed stablecoins. This regulatory green light established a formal licensing pathway for digital assets in the local market.

For corporate treasurers and institutional investors, the introduction of a regulated, bank-backed Hong Kong dollar stablecoin represents a new mechanism for digital settlements. It provides a compliant alternative within the digital asset ecosystem, operating entirely under the regulatory framework established by one of Asia's primary financial authorities.
