Nous Research nears $75M raise at $1.5B valuation

Decentralized AI lab Nous Research is securing $75 million at a $1.5 billion valuation, reflecting fierce investor demand for autonomous crypto agents competing to replace traditional software interfaces.

Nous Research is finalizing a funding round of at least $75 million led by Robot Ventures, with participation from USV, at a $1.5 billion valuation. The raise comes roughly 15 months after the decentralized AI lab closed a $50 million Series A led by Paradigm. That April 2025 round valued the startup's yet-to-launch token at $1 billion, pushing the company's valuation up sharply in a short period.

This rapid markup underscores how aggressively venture capital is pricing autonomous AI agents within the crypto sector. Investors are evidently prioritizing developer traction and open-source adoption over traditional revenue metrics when evaluating these decentralized networks.

The new capital will be used to expand the startup's flagship product, Hermes. This open-source AI agent competes directly with OpenClaw, a local PC-based agent that recently went viral. Nous Research released Hermes just weeks after OpenClaw's surge in popularity, equipping it with built-in capabilities for web search, coding, and image understanding.

A key differentiator for Hermes is its architecture. The agent runs locally on a desktop or a virtual private server, rather than relying entirely on centralized cloud infrastructure. Furthermore, the system learns from user interactions and builds new skills autonomously over time.

This approach has generated significant developer momentum. Hermes currently holds roughly 214,000 stars and nearly 40,000 forks on GitHub, figures that likely served as the primary justification for the lofty valuation.

Beyond the free open-source version, Nous Research is building a commercial monetization layer. Users can access a cloud-hosted version of Hermes priced in tiers ranging from $20 to $200 per month. The agent also integrates directly with communication platforms like Telegram and Discord, allowing users to automate tasks and exchange messages with the AI around the clock.

Founded in 2023 by Jeffrey Quesnelle, Karan Malhotra, Ryan Teknium, and Shivani Mitra, Nous Research had previously raised roughly $70 million. Its investor base includes prominent crypto venture firms like Paradigm, North Island Ventures, and OSS Capital, as well as angel investor Balaji Srinivasan. The strong interest in the current round indicates that financial markets remain highly receptive to crypto-native AI projects demonstrating tangible utility.
