Finland Sand Battery Highlights EU's Lithium Risk

A Finnish district heating company has deployed the world's largest sand battery, highlighting the urgent need for non-lithium alternatives as the EU races to triple its storage capacity and reduce reliance on Chinese supply chains.

Loviisan Lämpö has commissioned the world’s largest sand battery in the Finnish town of Pornainen. Built by Polar Night Energy, the installation meets up to a week of the town's winter heating demands and cuts associated greenhouse gas emissions by almost 70 percent. The system operates without rare earth materials.

The deployment arrives as Europe confronts a severe energy storage deficit. The European Commission has set a target of 200 GW by 2030, but the bloc currently only has 55 GW installed. By comparison, the United States has 137 GW and China holds a commanding 213.3 GW.

Despite the growth in wind and solar, the bloc still imports roughly 55 percent of its total energy, including oil and gas. Without adequate storage to bridge the gaps when renewable generation dips, Europe remains dependent on imported fossil fuels to keep the grid stable.

Brussels plans to fill most of this capacity gap with lithium-ion technology. However, lithium batteries typically discharge over a maximum of four hours, making them poorly suited for seasonal storage. Furthermore, the lithium supply chain is overwhelmingly controlled by China, exposing European markets to familiar geopolitical vulnerabilities.

Sand batteries are less energy-efficient than lithium-ion systems, confining their current commercial viability largely to district heating networks rather than broad grid-scale electricity storage. Yet, they represent a critical piece of the diversification puzzle.

“We’re changing from a world where big power plants were doing the energy production to where solar and wind are producing the energy, then we need a massive amount of storage,” said Tommi Eronen, CEO of Polar Night Energy. “Hopefully a big portion of those storages could be sand battery-type of storages where we don’t need rare earth materials, like in many chemical batteries, such as lithium-ion batteries,” Eronen added.

Europe's slow storage rollout is already distorting power markets, as wasted peak renewable production has forced negative pricing onto utilities. Analysts warn that limited flexibility resources could drive even greater volatility in the third quarter of 2026. Developing alternatives like thermal storage will be essential for the continent to absorb growing renewable capacity without remaining tethered to imported fossil gas.
