India Nifty at inflection point as options data flags 24,600 cap

India's benchmark index is testing a crucial resistance ceiling defined by heavy options call writing, dictating trading strategy for August as seasonal trends favor IT and auto stocks.

The Nifty 50 closed at 24,384 on Friday, up 66 points, capping a 760-point rebound over six sessions that leaves the Indian benchmark at a decisive technical fork. According to SBI Securities technical analyst Sudeep Shah, the index has been compressed into a 24,530 to 23,605 range over the past seven weeks. A breakout or breakdown from this band will dictate the market's next major trend.

Options market structure provides a clear map for this impending move. The 24,600 strike is acting as a formidable ceiling, with call writing nearly 16 times higher than put writing. A sustained move above this level would likely trigger a short-covering rally. Conversely, the 24,000 level serves as the floor, supported by the highest put open interest where put writing outpaces calls by a factor of nine. A breach there would accelerate selling.

The broader market remains constructive, with the Nifty Midcap 100 and Smallcap 100 indices both rising more than 0.4% alongside the Sensex, which added 166.5 points to finish at 78,095. However, the Nifty is currently hovering around its 200-day exponential moving average, a level it failed to hold in early July before a corrective decline.

August sector playbook

Historical seasonality offers a tactical edge heading into August. The auto and IT sectors have been the most reliable performers over the past two decades, posting positive August returns in 12 of the last 20 years. The IT index, which has already rebounded 18.5% from its July 1 low to jump 7% this week, carries an average August gain of 5.87%. Within IT, Persistent Systems, HCLTech, Tech Mahindra and Coforge show strong price structures.

The auto sector recently broke out of a consolidation range between 25,296 and 27,761. FMCG also historically outperforms in August, gaining in 13 of the last 20 years. Conversely, public sector enterprises have bucked their historical August strength by posting losses in each of the last three years.

For stock-specific positioning, Shah flagged Chola Finance, Paytm, Motherson, Torrent Pharma and Siemens as technically favorable. Bajaj Finance is exhibiting strong bullish momentum after retesting its 20-day EMA, while Eternal looks positive above a 285 to 290 support zone. Adani Ports remains under pressure, with a bearish bias persisting below 1,775, and Vedanta is stuck in a sideways 259 to 270 range awaiting a directional catalyst.
