Indian Equities Eye Flat Open Amid Fed Hold and Middle East Escalation
Indian benchmark indices are poised for a muted opening as investors weigh a steady US Federal Reserve policy against escalating Middle East tensions and volatile crude prices.
Indian benchmark indices are set to open flat on Thursday, with Gift Nifty futures indicating a discount of roughly 90 points to the previous close. This muted start follows a strong rebound on Wednesday, where the Nifty 50 reclaimed the 24,250 mark and the BSE Sensex rallied 1.16%.
Global Crosscurrents
The cautious domestic sentiment mirrors a complex global backdrop. The US Federal Reserve maintained its benchmark interest rate at 3.50%-3.75% for the fifth consecutive meeting, marking the second policy session under Chair Kevin Warsh. While the decision was widely expected, a split among policymakers reinforces that future rate cuts remain highly data-dependent, prompting a defensive advance in gold prices.
Geopolitical risks are further capping risk appetite as fresh US military strikes on Iran and reported attacks on US-owned infrastructure in Egypt and Jordan widen the regional conflict. Despite this escalation, crude oil prices retreated on Thursday with commercial tankers continuing to transit the Middle East. Brent fell 1.42% to $89.45 per barrel and WTI dipped to $83.90.
Technical Levels
For Indian investors, the near-term technical setup presents a critical juncture. Ajit Mishra, Senior Vice President of Research at Religare Broking, noted that the Nifty 50 has reclaimed its 20-day and 100-day DEMA resistance zones. The index now faces a crucial hurdle at 24,400, with immediate support resting between 24,050 and 24,150 should profit-taking emerge.
The financial sector is displaying a similarly guarded but constructive bias. Ponmudi R, CEO of Enrich Money, observed that the Bank Nifty has stabilized above key support levels, though a decisive break below 56,900 could invite fresh selling pressure. Navigating this volatility, brokerages are highlighting selective intraday opportunities in names such as Reliance Industries, Hindalco Industries, and Laurus Labs.
