Indian Equities Poised for Muted Open Amid Fed Hold and Middle East Tensions

Indian benchmark indices are set for a cautious start as persistent US interest rate uncertainty and elevated crude oil prices constrain investor sentiment.

Indian stock markets are poised for a flat to marginally positive opening on Thursday, with GIFT Nifty futures hovering around the 24,250 mark. This matches the previous close of the Nifty 50, reflecting a guarded investor mood amid a mixed global macroeconomic backdrop.

The US Federal Reserve left its benchmark interest rate unchanged at 3.50% to 3.75% on Wednesday. However, a split among policymakers signaled that future rate cuts will remain strictly data-dependent, prompting investors to closely monitor upcoming US inflation and growth metrics.

Geopolitical risks have also resurfaced following warnings from US President Donald Trump regarding Iran, raising fears of renewed Middle East escalation. Consequently, WTI crude oil prices have held firm in the $83 to $84 per barrel range, posing a persistent risk to India’s inflation outlook, current account balance, and rupee trajectory.

Domestically, market technicians are watching key support levels to gauge near-term direction. Vaishali Parekh, Vice President of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, noted that the Nifty 50 index has sustained strength above its 50-day exponential moving average near 23,991.

For bullish momentum to resume, Parekh stated that the benchmark must breach the 24,450 to 24,500 resistance zone. Clearing this hurdle would establish the stability required for further upward movement in the coming sessions.

The Bank Nifty index is currently in a consolidation phase, having ended the previous session near 57,200. The index continues to respect the strong support zone at its 50-day moving average of 56,850 while facing resistance near the 57,450 level.

A decisive move above the 57,500 threshold is required to confirm a bullish breakout. Achieving this would open the path toward near-term targets of 58,500 and eventually 60,000, according to Parekh’s analysis.

For intraday traders, Parekh highlighted specific opportunities in the mining and financial sectors. She recommended buy positions in Vedanta, Hindustan Zinc, and Jio Financial Services, attaching strict stop-loss parameters to each trade to manage downside risk in a volatile environment.
