Starbucks lifts full-year outlook as same-store sales beat estimates

Starbucks raised its annual forecast after underlying sales growth topped expectations, signaling that CEO Brian Niccol's operational shifts are gaining traction despite a revenue dip tied to its China restructuring.

Starbucks reported adjusted earnings of 85 cents per share on $9.32 billion in revenue for the latest quarter, easily surpassing analyst forecasts of 66 cents and $9.16 billion. Following the robust results, the coffee chain lifted its full-year outlook and notched its fourth consecutive quarter of same-store sales growth.

The headline revenue figure requires immediate context. While total net sales dipped 1% to $9.3 billion, this contraction is a direct result of corporate restructuring rather than a deterioration in consumer demand. In November, Starbucks formed a joint venture with Boyu Capital, selling a controlling stake in its Chinese operations. Because China is the company's second-largest market, divesting control artificially lowered the top-line number reported to Wall Street.

Stripping out this accounting shift reveals underlying business strength that caught analysts off guard. Global same-store sales climbed 7.9%, well above the 6% estimate compiled by StreetAccount. This organic growth was driven by an 8.1% increase in the crucial U.S. home market, complemented by a 5.7% rise in international locations outside the U.S.

For market professionals, the divergence between the reported revenue decline and the significant upside in comparable sales is the most critical takeaway. It indicates that the baseline health of the Starbucks brand is improving at a faster clip than anticipated. Furthermore, the 19-cent overshoot on adjusted earnings per share signals meaningful leverage and cost discipline within the remaining corporate structure.

"This was the quarter our momentum became truly measurable," CEO Brian Niccol said.

The combination of accelerating comparable-store sales and an upgraded annual forecast provides concrete evidence that the company's operational improvements are taking hold. Investors will now look to future quarters to see if management can sustain this pace as the China transition completes and the Boyu Capital joint venture fully takes over operations in that key market.
