Asian Paints profit surges 40% as pricing power expands margins

Asian Paints posted a 40% rise in first-quarter profit to Rs 1,539 crore, demonstrating that calibrated price increases and cost controls can successfully shield margins from raw material volatility.

Asian Paints reported a consolidated net profit of Rs 1,539 crore for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, a 40% increase from Rs 1,100 crore a year earlier. Consolidated net sales rose 18% year-on-year to Rs 10,521 crore. Profit before tax climbed 39% to Rs 2,096 crore.

For investors, the critical takeaway was margin expansion. Profit before depreciation, interest, and tax margins widened to 20.6% from 18.2%, with PBDIT reaching Rs 2,169 crore. This leverage indicates the company is successfully navigating inflationary pressures rather than simply relying on top-line volume.

The core India decorative paints business generated 9% volume growth and 16.6% value growth. Managing Director and CEO Amit Syngle attributed the performance to "measured price increases, an improved product mix, formulation and sourcing efficiencies, and disciplined cost management." The PPGAP segment also contributed, with sales rising 13% to Rs 652 crore and profit before tax edging up to Rs 103 crore.

International operations provided a significant boost, with net sales jumping 27% to Rs 936 crore. On a constant-currency basis, sales grew 20%, driven by Egypt, the UAE, Oman, Nepal, and Bangladesh. Profit before tax from these operations surged 95% to Rs 74 crore. Syngle said the company's "Middle East business delivered a strong performance despite challenges arising from the ongoing conflict in the region."

Not all segments shared in the upside. The home décor business delivered mixed results, continuing its maturation through the Beautiful Homes network. Bath fittings sales fell 4% to Rs 85 crore and losses widened, while kitchen sales grew 10.1% to Rs 108 crore and losses narrowed sharply to Rs 0.3 crore. White Teak sales declined 7.4%, partially offset by an 11.2% increase at Weatherseal.

Looking ahead, the company warned it remains vigilant regarding raw material price volatility. However, the first-quarter results signal that Asian Paints' core pricing architecture and operational efficiencies are currently robust enough to protect bottom-line growth.
