Antony Waste halts Pune plant after collapse kills nine

Nine workers died in a waste mound collapse at an Antony Waste facility in Pune, forcing a temporary halt to its waste-to-energy plant and putting the company's liability exposure in focus for investors.

A waste mound collapsed onto the administration building of an Antony Waste facility in Pune, killing nine employees and injuring fourteen others who were rescued from the debris. The incident occurred at the company's Waste-to-Energy plant located in the Pimpri Chinchwad municipal area.

Antony Waste has temporarily suspended operations at the plant while a structural and safety assessment is underway. Crucially for revenue continuity, the company noted that its municipal waste collection and transportation services remain unaffected by the halt.

The financial impact on the company will depend heavily on the extent of its insurance coverage. Antony Waste stated that its assets and operations at the site are adequately insured. Investors will look to future exchange filings to understand how claim payouts might offset direct costs and asset write-downs resulting from the collapse.

Preliminary findings attribute the disaster to continuous, exceptionally heavy rainfall that destabilised the waste mound. The facility was operating under a scheduled maintenance shutdown at the time, which restricted the number of personnel on site.

The company has committed to covering all hospital, medical, and counselling expenses for the injured employees. For the families of the deceased, Antony Waste will pay funeral costs and provide a financial assistance package of Rs 25 lakh per family. This compensation combines ex gratia company support with payouts from applicable statutory welfare schemes, insurance policies, and the company's Group Insurance Policy.

Emergency response operations were swift, involving personnel from the Fire Brigade, the National Disaster Response Force, and a squad of the Indian Army. Teams from the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation and other disaster response agencies also assisted at the site.
