Retail Investors Reject Tesla, Palantir and Strategy Inc. Shares Over Valuation and Ethics

An online investor discussion highlights growing retail aversion to specific equities, driven by extreme valuations, leadership controversies, and ethical concerns that could influence long-term market liquidity.

Retail investors are increasingly drawing hard lines on specific equities, openly debating which stocks they refuse to own regardless of broader market bullishness. A recent investor discussion highlighted Tesla, Palantir Technologies, and Strategy Inc. as the most frequently rejected names.

This aversion underscores a persistent divide in market sentiment, where sky-high multiples deter capital despite strong momentum. Participants specifically pointed to elevated price-to-earnings and price-to-sales ratios as warning signs that certain stocks will eventually revert to their mean.

Tesla dominated the negative sentiment, with critics arguing its market capitalization is fundamentally disconnected from reality. One investor argued there is "no rational explanation for a bit player in the car market being worth more than all the established automakers combined," adding that the stock is "overvalued by a factor of 50."

Distrust in leadership also plays a central role. One participant wrote, "I don't trust TSLA," noting they are fine with "that ship sailed," while others extended their avoidance to any enterprise associated with Elon Musk, including SpaceX.

Similar leadership-driven aversion targets Palantir Technologies. Investors cited discomfort with co-founder Peter Thiel, with one commenter stating, "Peter Thiel is a very repulsive person along with Musk. Especially Palantir I find very dystopian." This rejection also extended to other figures associated with the "PayPal mafia."

Strategy Inc. faced skepticism regarding its fundamental utility as an equity. Critics argued that purchasing the stock is redundant, with one investor writing, "It's all BTC. Just buy BTC."

Conversely, defenders noted that the company effectively provides leveraged Bitcoin exposure. This structure allows investors to gain amplified crypto market access without the margin call risk that comes with borrowing money to buy Bitcoin directly.

Beyond valuation and leadership, ethical considerations are actively shaping portfolio construction. Investors reported screening out defense contractors, tobacco producers, and specific healthcare firms.

UnitedHealth Group was explicitly criticized by a participant who condemned its "business model based on denying coverage." This highlights how non-financial metrics are becoming decisive factors for a segment of the investing public, potentially creating long-term reputational headwinds for targeted firms.
