Akwa Ibom highlights infrastructure and security to attract foreign investment
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno used a continental security summit to pitch the Nigerian state’s infrastructure and stability improvements as a draw for foreign capital.
Akwa Ibom State Governor Umo Eno pitched the Nigerian region as a premier investment destination during the 19th Security Watch Africa Conference in Banjul, The Gambia. Represented by Deputy Governor Akon Eyakenyi, the administration highlighted recent infrastructure and security upgrades designed to reassure foreign capital.
For international investors, sub-national stability and logistics are critical factors when allocating capital in Nigeria. The state's leadership argued that its large market, youthful demographic, and democratic environment provide a strong foundation for business despite broader national challenges.
To demonstrate operational readiness, the administration detailed extensive public works. Projects include 1,346 kilometres of new roads and bridges, a 350-bed international hospital, and the enrollment of over 300,000 residents in a state health insurance scheme.
The governor also outlined strategic commercial developments aimed at boosting tourism and logistics. Key initiatives include the ARISE Palm Resort, an international convention centre, the expansion of Ibom Air’s regional routes, and the ongoing construction of the Ibom Deep Seaport.
“From land through our extensive road network, to air through Ibom Air, and to sea through the Ibom Deep Seaport, Akwa Ibom is ready to partner with the world,” the governor stated. The address was read on his behalf by his deputy.
Security remains a primary concern for corporate operations in the region. Akwa Ibom has established a dedicated Ministry of Internal Security and Waterways, led by a retired military officer, to coordinate with conventional agencies.
Additional measures include a modern Security Command and Control Centre, the Ibom Community Watch, and the integration of 2,272 village youth leaders into the state security architecture. The administration also expressed support for establishing a formal State Police force.
“Governance must go beyond political leadership to improving the material conditions of the people,” the governor said. “Meaningful development can only thrive where lives and property are protected, and the rule of law is upheld.”
The investment pitch coincided with Eno receiving the African Leader in People-Centric Governance Award from Security Watch Africa. Patrick Agbambu, the group's international coordinator, praised the governor's citizen-focused leadership style.
