Morgan Stanley Bitcoin ETF Hits $391M, Defying Market Outflows

Morgan Stanley’s Bitcoin ETF has amassed nearly $400 million since April, signaling robust institutional demand even as broader crypto funds face renewed selling pressure.

Morgan Stanley’s Bitcoin exchange-traded fund has gathered $391 million in assets under management, cementing its status as a standout debut in the digital asset space. The NYSE Arca-listed fund attracted $15.7 million in fresh capital this week alone, according to Farside Investors. Crucially, it was the only American Bitcoin ETF to record inflows on Thursday, a day when every other comparable fund experienced outflows.

Reaching this threshold in under two months is a notable achievement, as many ETFs never amass $400 million in total assets. Eric Balchunas, a senior ETF analyst at Bloomberg Intelligence, observed on Friday that the Morgan Stanley product ranks among the most successful fund launches of the year. As the first Bitcoin ETF issued by a major bank, its rapid accumulation demonstrates that institutional investors are actively utilizing traditional financial gateways for digital asset exposure rather than holding the tokens directly.

The bank's early success with the fund, which brought in over $33 million on its first day in April, stems from a deliberate, multi-year strategy. Morgan Stanley began offering its wealthy clients access to Bitcoin through third-party vehicles like Galaxy Digital back in 2021. Chairman and CEO Ted Pick emphasized last year that the bank was working closely with regulators to facilitate safe crypto offerings. More recently, Amy Oldenburg, the bank's head of digital assets, identified client education—not product architecture—as the central challenge to broader Bitcoin adoption.

The wider Bitcoin ETF market, however, presents a more mixed picture. After a strong run that saw nearly $1 billion in weekly inflows, the sector broke its winning streak on Thursday. Over the full seven-day period, US Bitcoin ETFs still managed to net $274 million in new investment. Bitcoin's price recently sat at $64,096, marking a 1% decline over the past 24 hours while remaining virtually unchanged over the week.

Market observers caution that this renewed institutional appetite may not translate into immediate price appreciation. European asset manager CoinShares noted last week that while investors are returning to Bitcoin funds, broader headwinds remain. “We see no significant upside potential from here,” wrote James Butterfill, the firm's head of research, suggesting that current inflows are being absorbed rather than driving a new market rally.
