Disney's $250M Moana Remake Faces Steep Loss After $95M Debut

Disney’s live-action “Moana” opened to just $95 million globally, raising serious doubts about the studio's costly strategy of remaking its animated catalog.

Disney’s live-action adaptation of "Moana" generated just $95 million in global ticket sales during its opening weekend. The result fell short of industry expectations and threatens to become a costly misstep for the studio.

The film earned $43 million in North America and $52 million overseas, missing domestic projections of $45 million to $55 million. With theaters typically retaining roughly half of gross receipts, Disney’s initial share of the box office is likely around $47.5 million. That leaves a significant deficit against the film's reported $250 million production budget, which does not include the tens of millions typically spent on global marketing campaigns.

This weak debut challenges the underlying economics of Disney’s heavily relied-upon live-action remake strategy. The studio has historically mined its animated vault to produce lower-risk, high-margin theatrical releases. However, the "Moana" results indicate that consumer appetite for these remakes is fracturing, turning what was once a reliable profit engine into a potential liability.

The gap between this live-action version and its animated counterparts highlights the problem. "Moana 2" shattered Thanksgiving records last year with a $139.7 million traditional weekend opening. Even the original 2016 animated "Moana" debuted higher, earning $56.6 million in its first weekend. Despite bringing back Dwayne Johnson to star as the demigod Maui, the live-action version posted one of the worst opening weekends for any Disney live-action remake.

The broader family entertainment market remains active, but revenue is consolidating around animated sequels rather than live-action reboots. Universal’s "Minions & Monsters" secured second place at the box office with $20.5 million, while Pixar’s "Toy Story 5" added $18.5 million, elevating its domestic total to $403.7 million. Earlier this year, Disney’s live-action "Lilo & Stitch" opened to $146 million en route to over $1 billion globally, proving the format can still work but making the "Moana" shortfall more glaring.

The July box office has largely underperformed for Hollywood, increasing the pressure on upcoming releases. The Michael Jackson biopic "Michael" recently crossed $1 billion globally, becoming the first biopic to reach that milestone and only the second film to do so this year alongside "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie." Studios are now looking to Christopher Nolan’s "The Odyssey" to stabilize the summer. The film is projected to open between $100 million and $120 million next weekend, exceeding the $82.4 million start of "Oppenheimer" but falling short of the $158.4 million and $160.8 million openings of Nolan's Batman films.
