Mirae Asset pivots Korbit exchange to RWA platform

South Korean financial giant Mirae Asset has acquired a controlling stake in crypto exchange Korbit and will rebrand it as Digital X to build an institutional-grade platform bridging traditional finance and digital assets.

Mirae Asset Consulting has finalized a 97.15% acquisition of Korbit, South Korea’s oldest cryptocurrency exchange. The purchase, recently approved by the South Korean Fair Trade Commission, paves the way for the platform's rebranding as Digital X. The firm stated it has no immediate plans to purchase the remaining shares, choosing instead to focus entirely on building out the new platform.

Rather than challenging domestic trading giants Upbit and Bithumb for retail market share, Mirae is positioning Digital X as a distinct infrastructure layer. Korbit currently holds less than 1% of South Korea's crypto market. Digital X will instead function as a bridge between traditional and digital finance, integrating real-world assets, security tokens, stablecoins, and conventional investments into a single ecosystem.

For institutional investors, the pivot signals a maturing market where compliance and asset integration outweigh pure trading volume. Mirae emphasized that the platform will enforce strict anti-money laundering, know-your-customer, and fraud-detection standards to accommodate institutional capital alongside retail traders.

The company intends to differentiate its offering through research and data rather than competing on trading fees or speculative features. "We plan to strengthen investor education and research capabilities and develop Digital X into an 'intelligent investment platform' where knowledge, information and in-depth investment insights are organically connected," Mirae said.

"We intend to combine Mirae Asset's extensive global investment expertise with Korbit's digital asset capabilities to promote the sound and sustainable growth of the digital asset industry in Korea and globally," the firm added.

The move reflects a growing strategy among traditional finance groups to treat digital asset exchanges as foundational technology for tokenizing conventional markets rather than mere venues for cryptocurrency speculation. "The acquisition was carried out through lawful procedures following a thorough review of the relevant laws and regulatory framework," Mirae noted. The firm explained that Mirae Asset Consulting was selected as the acquiring entity after a comprehensive review of its business synergies with digital assets.

For market participants, the entry of a major traditional asset manager into tokenized infrastructure underscores the shifting value proposition of crypto exchanges in Asia.
