Mirae Asset seals $91m Korbit acquisition
South Korean financial group Mirae Asset has finalised its $91 million purchase of crypto exchange Korbit, marking a significant push by a traditional finance powerhouse into the digital asset sector.
Mirae Asset Consulting has closed its acquisition of a 92.06% stake in South Korean crypto exchange Korbit for 133.48 billion won ($91 million), making the traditional financial group the exchange’s largest shareholder. The deal, initially agreed in February, concluded following the completion of necessary regulatory procedures.
For market participants and users, immediate business operations will continue as normal. Korbit stated that its operating entity remains unchanged, with trading, deposits, and withdrawals proceeding without interruption. Furthermore, customer funds remain fully segregated under South Korea’s Virtual Asset User Protection Act. This regulatory compliance is a critical factor for institutional investors assessing counterparty risk in the digital asset space.
The transaction underscores a broader trend of traditional financial institutions acquiring direct exposure to digital asset infrastructure. For Mirae Asset, an affiliate of one of South Korea’s largest financial groups, the purchase is a deliberate expansion into digital asset businesses. Rather than building a trading platform from scratch, the firm has absorbed a functioning entity to immediately establish a foothold in the sector.
Korbit’s value is rooted in its status as one of South Korea’s five won-based crypto exchanges. Local regulations dictate that these platforms must secure partnerships with domestic banks to provide fiat on- and off-ramp services. By acquiring Korbit, Mirae Asset bypasses the substantial hurdle of negotiating these banking relationships independently.
The strategic logic of the deal is reinforced by South Korea’s position as one of the world’s most active retail crypto markets. Exchanges in this region generate much of their revenue from trading fees. Mirae Asset’s takeover therefore grants the financial group immediate access to a lucrative, fee-driven revenue stream backed by an established operational base.
