Macquarie names Greg Ward CEO as investors back continuity
Macquarie has appointed internal candidate Greg Ward as its next chief executive, a move welcomed by fund managers who expect the bank's profitable strategy to continue uninterrupted.
Macquarie has named Greg Ward as its next chief executive, selecting a long-time insider to lead the Australian financial group. Ward currently runs the firm's Banking and Financial Services division and previously served as its chief financial officer.
Fund managers responded positively to the news, viewing the appointment as a deliberate signal of stability. With Macquarie delivering strong financial performance across its various business lines, investors said an internal succession eliminates the risk of a disruptive strategic overhaul.
VanEck's Hannah described Ward as an experienced executive who understands the company well. Hannah expects the incoming chief executive to preserve the bank's current growth momentum rather than implement sweeping changes, noting that the transition supports a strategy of continuity.
Hugh Dive, Chief Investment Officer at Atlas Funds Management, noted that Ward was the market's anticipated choice. His prior tenure as CFO provided him with a comprehensive view of the group's diverse operations. Katana Asset Management echoed this assessment, characterising the appointment as a logical internal succession rather than an attempt to reshape the company.
While investors do not expect radical changes, Ward's specific background may influence where the bank focuses its resources. Dive suggested the Banking and Financial Services division could receive greater emphasis under his leadership. This unit has steadily increased its contribution to Macquarie's overall earnings, offering a more stable profit stream than the group's more volatile investment banking operations. Hannah also highlighted this division as a potentially increasingly important growth engine.
Before the announcement, some market participants had speculated Macquarie might look to its faster-growing areas, such as asset management or commodities, for a successor. Andy Forster, Portfolio Manager at Argo Investments, noted that while those areas are expanding rapidly, Ward's proven track record makes him a credible and reassuring choice. Forster added that Macquarie's established business model and recent financial results ultimately support a conservative leadership transition to protect shareholder value.
