Indian Equity Benchmarks Eye Further Losses as Nifty Breaks Critical Support
Indian benchmark indices are poised for a negative opening as geopolitical tensions and technical breakdowns below key support levels signal sustained selling pressure for market participants.
Indian benchmark indices are projected to open lower on Thursday, extending recent losses as geopolitical friction and elevated energy concerns weigh on global market sentiment. The Gift Nifty indicated a negative start, trading at a discount of nearly 106 points to the previous close of Nifty futures.
This follows a sharp decline on Wednesday, where the Sensex dropped 0.92 percent to close at 76,755.05. The broader Nifty 50 simultaneously slipped 0.79 percent to settle at 23,996.25, breaking below the psychologically significant 24,000 threshold.
The breach of this level has intensified selling pressure, shifting near-term market dynamics for institutional and retail investors alike. Shrikant Chouhan, Head of Equity Research at Kotak Securities, noted that the Sensex has slipped below its 20-day simple moving average.
Chouhan warned that weak sentiment is likely to persist as long as the index remains under 77,000. He projects the correction wave could drag the index toward its 50-day moving average near 76,000, or potentially lower to the 75,500 level.
Options and Technical Indicators Signal Volatility
Derivatives data reinforces this cautious outlook. Chandan Taparia of Motilal Oswal Financial Services highlighted that maximum call open interest sits at the 24,000 strike, suggesting an immediate trading range between 23,700 and 24,200 for the Nifty 50.
Technical analysts observe a strong bearish daily candle, indicating a breakdown of the recent short-term consolidation. Nagaraj Shetti at HDFC Securities pointed to the next crucial support zone between 23,650 and 23,800, which aligns with a significant price gap from mid-June.
The financial sector is showing particular vulnerability. The Bank Nifty index fell 1.23 percent on Wednesday to 57,126.80, closing below its 20-day exponential moving average for the first time since early July.
Sudeep Shah of SBI Securities pointed to a falling MACD line and rising red histogram bars as evidence of accelerating downside momentum. He identified immediate support in the 56,600 to 56,700 zone, with further declines possible toward 56,000 if that floor fails.
Adding to the caution, Om Mehra of SAMCO Securities noted that narrow Bollinger Bands on the Bank Nifty chart typically precede a sharp expansion in volatility. With the relative strength index dipping below 50, traders are bracing for heightened intraday fluctuations.
For market professionals navigating this environment, level-based trading remains the most prudent strategy. Investors are advised to monitor the 24,200 resistance level on the Nifty closely, as reclaiming it is a prerequisite for neutralizing the current near-term selling pressure.
