Indian equities fall as West Asia conflict, crude oil weigh

Escalating West Asia tensions and rising crude prices drove Indian benchmark indices below key psychological levels, triggering a broad sell-off that favored defensive stocks.

Indian equities declined sharply on Tuesday, with the benchmark Nifty50 slipping below the 24,000 level as escalating conflicts in West Asia and rising crude oil prices triggered broad-based selling. The Nifty50 closed down 191.45 points, or 0.79%, at 23,996.25. The BSE Sensex dropped 715.06 points, or 0.92%, to settle at 76,755.05.

The geopolitical turbulence drove investors away from risk-sensitive assets. Higher crude prices represent a familiar headwind for the domestic economy, typically pressuring corporate margins and inflation expectations.

The selling pressure extended well beyond large-caps. The Nifty Midcap 150 fell 1.06%, and the Nifty Smallcap 250 lost 1.31%, indicating a broad flight to safety. Sectoral performance was starkly divided, with Nifty Bank and Nifty IT dropping 1.2% and 1.4% respectively.

Defensive sectors successfully bucked the trend as capital rotated toward safer havens. The Nifty FMCG Index gained 0.6%, and the NSE Auto Index edged up 0.2%. Pharmaceutical stocks faced specific headwinds, sliding on investor fears over a proposed 100% generic drug tariff plan by US President Donald Trump.

Major lenders like SBI, Axis Bank, and HDFC Bank, alongside IT giants Infosys and Wipro, were among the most actively traded names during the session. For market professionals, the breach of the 24,000 mark on the Nifty50 signals a definitive shift in short-term sentiment. The combination of international conflict and unpredictable US trade policy suggests volatility will remain elevated.

Until the West Asia situation stabilizes, the market lacks a clear catalyst for a sustained rebound. The sharp divergence between cyclical sectors and defensive plays underscores a market currently bracing for further turbulence.
