Sovereign Trust Insurance completes rights issue to fund expansion

Nigerian non-life insurer Sovereign Trust Insurance has successfully closed a rights issue, bolstering its capital base to support underwriting expansion and maintain a heavy claims payout schedule.

Sovereign Trust Insurance Plc has completed a rights issue that drew strong demand from its existing shareholder base. The capital raise immediately strengthens the Nigerian insurer’s balance sheet, providing the financial foundation required to expand underwriting capacity and increase policy issuance in a competitive market.

For equity investors, the successful subscription serves as a tangible signal of confidence in the firm's corporate governance and long-term strategic trajectory. In the Nigerian insurance sector, capital adequacy directly dictates market share and risk appetite. A fortified capital base allows a non-life underwriter to bid for larger corporate contracts and absorb higher severity losses without jeopardizing solvency ratios.

The company is already deploying its enhanced liquidity to meet existing policyholder obligations. As of June 30, 2026, Sovereign Trust had settled claims exceeding N2.7 billion across its various business lines. Lucas Durojaiye, managing director and CEO, noted that the ability to maintain this payout velocity is a primary indicator of an insurer's financial strength.

“Our promise to policyholders goes beyond selling insurance policies,” Durojaiye said. “We remain committed to honouring our obligations promptly and efficiently while continuing to build a stronger and more resilient organisation for all our stakeholders.”

The capacity to consistently honor claims is a critical metric for retail and corporate clients assessing counterparty risk in emerging markets. Sovereign Trust’s financial position is externally validated by GCR, an international rating agency, which affirmed the company's healthy standing and sound underwriting practices.

Looking forward, management plans to allocate the fresh capital toward strategic business expansion and product innovation. The stated objective is to drive improved value creation for shareholders while defending the firm's position among Nigeria’s leading non-life insurers. By pairing a robust capital base with strict operational discipline, Sovereign Trust is positioning itself to capture greater market share.
