Brazil oil output hits record 4.5m bpd as Asian buyers flee Mideast

Record Brazilian oil production is capturing market share from the conflict-stricken Middle East, triggering a wave of supermajor investment that will reshape global energy supply chains.

Brazil’s oil production surged to a record 4.5 million barrels per day in June as escalating U.S.-Iran hostilities redirected global crude flows. Disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz, which handles a fifth of global hydrocarbon supplies, have pushed Asian buyers to seek safer alternatives. Brazil’s total hydrocarbon output reached 5.8 million barrels of oil equivalent daily, a 4.2% increase from May.

Asian refiners are paying a premium for security. China imported a record 1.6 million barrels per day from Brazil in March, while India took 15% of the country's oil exports. This flight from Middle Eastern crude boosted Brazil’s first-quarter petroleum export revenues by 31% year-over-year to $12.56 billion. The shift is anchored by the Tupi grade, a medium sweet crude with low sulfur and minimal metal contaminants that is cheaper to refine into high-grade fuels.

The supply shock is accelerating an already robust capital deployment cycle. Upstream investment in Brazil is projected to reach $21.3 billion in 2026. State-controlled Petrobras is driving this expansion, committing $109 billion to operations between 2026 and 2030. The company will direct $69.2 billion toward upstream projects, with 62% earmarked for pre-salt assets, aiming to lift its total output to 3.4 million barrels of oil equivalent daily.

Foreign supermajors are following the same strategy. Shell has nearly doubled its Brazilian holdings since 2022 to roughly 70 blocks, making it the country's second-largest oil producer behind Petrobras and Brazil its largest producing country globally. Equinor, TotalEnergies, ExxonMobil, and Chevron are also expanding deepwater operations, favoring Brazil's regulatory stability over Middle Eastern geopolitical risk.

The boom extends beyond crude. Natural gas output hit a record 7.7 billion cubic feet per day in June, up 19.6% year-over-year. This surge is filling a critical regional supply gap left by declining production in Colombia and Trinidad and Tobago. Even a recent 60-day extension of a 12% export tax by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has done little to slow the momentum, keeping Brazil on track to become a top-five global hydrocarbon exporter.
