American Eagle taps World Cup winner Yamal for apparel line
American Eagle is turning its World Cup ambassadorship with Lamine Yamal into a global apparel line, betting the 19-year-old Spanish star can drive Gen Z sales as marketers search for soccer's next icon.
American Eagle will launch an exclusive apparel collection with Lamine Yamal globally on Sept. 3, capitalizing on Spain's World Cup victory. The line, preceded by an Aug. 26 back-to-school campaign, represents a strategic deepening for the retailer. Yamal is transitioning from American Eagle's first-ever brand ambassador to a signature collaborator whose name will drive product sales.
The collection features baggy denim, oversized shirts, cargo pants and hooded jackets built around Yamal's casual aesthetic. By anchoring a product line in his off-duty look, American Eagle is making a direct play for the Gen Z streetwear market. The strategy relies on Yamal's ability to influence younger consumers who follow athletes for their social media presence as much as their sport.
Yamal's commercial rise arrives at a critical juncture for global sports marketing. With Lionel Messi nearing retirement and Cristiano Ronaldo exiting the World Cup stage, sponsors have spent years searching for the sport's next universally recognizable face. While Kylian Mbappe, Erling Haaland and Jude Bellingham have all been positioned as contenders, Yamal's on-field success in North America appears to have secured him a decisive commercial advantage.
At 19 years old, Yamal offers sponsors a rare, long-term asset. His existing endorsement portfolio already includes Adidas, Visa, McDonald's and Powerade. Furthermore, his multicultural background—born in Spain to a Moroccan father and an Equatorial Guinean mother—provides multinational brands with a vehicle to reach diverse consumer bases across multiple continents simultaneously.
The financial impact is already materializing at the club level. Barcelona recently assigned Yamal the iconic No. 10 shirt previously worn by Messi, resulting in an immediate uptick in jersey sales. As La Liga accelerates its expansion into the U.S. market, Yamal stands to become the commercial centerpiece of both his club and his corporate partners. Brands are purchasing the emotional narrative of a generational succession, and American Eagle is among the first to monetize it directly at retail.
