Record 9.52m US student loans in default after payment pause ends

A record 9.52 million US student loans are in default following the end of pandemic-era payment pauses, threatening to severely constrain consumer credit and disposable income.

Federal student loan defaults have hit an all-time high of 9.52 million, surging by roughly 4.2 million since June 2025. The spike follows the expiration of a pandemic-era freeze that had paused payments and prevented loans from falling into delinquency.

For financial markets, this represents a sudden, massive deterioration in US consumer credit health. The scale of the increase signals a systemic shock to household balance sheets that will limit disposable income and purchasing power across a broad demographic.

The Trump administration has temporarily delayed wage and tax refund garnishments, but these collection mechanisms are widely expected to return. When they do, the federal government will directly divert earnings from a significant segment of the workforce.

The impact on broader consumer lending will be pronounced. "Payment history is the single biggest factor in a FICO Score, so for anyone behind on student loans, that is the first thing to address," said Tommy Lee, senior director at FICO. Downgraded credit profiles will restrict borrowers' access to auto loans, mortgages, and other credit products.

Beyond paying the balance in full, which remains unfeasible for most, borrowers must navigate the trade-offs between consolidation and rehabilitation. Consolidation offers a faster application process but leaves the default and prior late payments on credit records for seven years. Rehabilitation takes several months but clears the default notation.

"A federal student loan default can result in wage garnishment, tax refund garnishment, and have negative impact on credit for years to come," said Stacey MacPhetres, senior director of education finance at Bright Horizons. She advises borrowers to immediately open correspondence from loan servicers or the Department of Education to initiate resolution.

The Department of Education's Federal Student Aid office noted that swift engagement can limit the financial damage. "If you make repayment arrangements soon enough after your loan has gone into default, you may be able to resolve the default quickly," the agency said.
