AMD data center revenue drives $888 billion market cap

AMD’s 57% data center revenue surge has pushed its market capitalization to $888 billion, forcing investors to weigh a proven turnaround against a rich 182 trailing price-to-earnings ratio.

Advanced Micro Devices has crossed an $888 billion market capitalization after posting first-quarter fiscal 2026 revenue of $10.3 billion. The company's data center segment generated $5.8 billion, a 57% year-over-year increase that confirms its transition from a recovering chipmaker to a primary artificial intelligence infrastructure provider.

The valuation represents a sharp pivot from October 2014, when Lisa Su assumed the CEO role and shares traded at roughly $3.28. A $10,000 investment made on her first day is now worth $1.66 million, a 16,498% return that vastly outpaces the 281% gain of the S&P 500 over the same period.

AMD is no longer merely competing on central processors. Landmark partnerships with Meta, which committed to up to 6 gigawatts of AMD Instinct GPUs, and OpenAI provide tangible demand for its MI300, MI350, and upcoming MI450 accelerators. The 2025 purchase of ZT Systems further allows AMD to supply full AI factories rather than isolated components.

Su has set an aggressive financial target, projecting tens of billions in annual data center AI revenue by 2027. "We see a clear path to exceed our long-term financial targets, including delivering more than $20 in EPS over the strategic time frame," Su stated. The first quarter offered early validation, with diluted earnings per share of $1.37 beating analyst estimates by 5.88%.

The current stock price of $544.43, up 154% year to date, demands a premium. Shares trade at a trailing price-to-earnings ratio of 182, leaving little margin for error. The valuation risk is compounded by historical volatility; the stock suffered multiple drawdowns exceeding 50% and only recently rebounded from a 52-week low of $149.22 to a high of $584.73.

Leadership has also taken some chips off the table. Su sold shares at prices ranging from $433 to $476 in mid-2026. For market participants, AMD's operational turnaround is undeniable, but sustaining this momentum will require capturing significant market share from Nvidia at a time when the stock is priced for perfection.
