AMD to invest $5 billion in Anthropic, secure 2GW chip order

AMD to invest $5 billion in Anthropic, secure 2GW chip order

Advanced Micro Devices is committing up to $5 billion to Anthropic in a milestone-linked deal that secures a massive order for its AI chips and directly challenges Nvidia's market dominance.

Advanced Micro Devices will invest up to $5 billion in Anthropic, securing a massive order for its latest-generation AI chips. Under the agreement, the AI startup will purchase up to 2 gigawatts of computing capacity, with deliveries scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027.

The financial structure of the deal is directly tied to execution. AMD specified that the investment is contingent upon Anthropic hitting certain deployment milestones, a mechanism that aligns the chipmaker's capital outlay with actual hardware consumption rather than mere promises.

AMD Chief Executive Lisa Su framed the agreement as the product of deep technical integration. She noted that the companies' engineering teams had been working together for some time, adding that "large-scale AI computing deployments require long-term planning."

The infrastructure strategy for the 2 gigawatts of compute is multi-pronged. Anthropic will deploy a portion of the AMD chips within its own data centers, while leasing the remainder through established cloud providers and neocloud operators.

Beyond the direct chip purchase and investment, AMD is negotiating to provide a financial backstop for Anthropic’s future data-center leases. This potential guarantee would further de-risk Anthropic's aggressive expansion plans by ensuring the startup has the financial backing to secure the physical real estate required to house the new hardware.

For AMD, this transaction represents a strategic breakthrough in its campaign to erode Nvidia's dominance in the AI chip market. Developers are actively looking to diversify their supply chains to mitigate single-vendor risk. Securing a 2-gigawatt commitment from a leading AI firm serves as a powerful market validation for AMD's latest architecture.

Anthropic, meanwhile, is addressing an existential constraint in the current AI landscape: computing scarcity. The startup is racing to secure the processing power needed to service growing demand for its AI models. By locking in capacity for 2027 now, Anthropic ensures it will not be outbid for critical infrastructure as the sector continues to scale.
