Japan backs $1m digital skills training for Nigerian teachers
Japan is investing $1 million to train 2,000 Nigerian teachers in digital skills, marking another step in the country's push to build a tech-ready workforce for its expanding digital economy.
Japan has committed approximately $1 million to train at least 2,000 Nigerian teachers and school leaders in digital skills. The funding expands the country's push to integrate technology into its education system.
The investment supports a mobile-based professional development programme launched during a three-day Master Training Workshop. "Japan is investing approximately US$1 million in the initiative, while partners presented 40 tablets and two edge computing devices to support nationwide implementation," the Federal Ministry of Education said.
The curriculum focuses on digital literacy, artificial intelligence in education, and the GOKU Mobile Learning Platform. "The Federal Government has commenced a three-day Master Training Workshop to strengthen teacher professional development through mobile-based learning, with the programme expected to reach at least 2,000 teachers and school leaders nationwide, while placing special emphasis on empowering female educators," the statement added.
For technology investors, the programme underscores the specific infrastructure required to upskill Africa's largest workforce. The reliance on mobile platforms and localized edge computing reflects the practical realities of deploying educational technology in emerging markets where traditional broadband is inconsistent.
This Japanese investment aligns with the Nigeria Education Sector Renewal Initiative and adds to a surge of foreign capital flowing into Nigerian digital skilling. In February 2025, Microsoft announced a $1 million investment to equip one million Nigerians with AI and digital skills.
By December 2025, Microsoft reported it had trained more than four million Nigerians since 2021. The government has accelerated these partnerships to prepare its workforce for a technology-driven economy.
Earlier this year, the government launched AI pedagogy training for 6,000 secondary school teachers and a tuition-free postgraduate diploma for technical educators across six universities. In May 2026, the government partnered with Coursera to launch the Digital Training Academy, targeting 36,000 youths with certifications.
Dr. Uchenna Uba, Director of Colleges of Education, represented the Minister of State for Education at the workshop. He described the initiative as "a major milestone in advancing teacher quality, digital innovation and improved learning outcomes through strategic international partnerships."
